Rodin Eve

$500

The French state commissioned this cast in 1911 for the Musée du Luxembourg, and it moved to the Musée Rodin in 1918. Rodin had originally envisioned Adam and Eve as matching figures flanking The Gates of Hell, part of his 1881 design for the doors. Work on the large female figure stalled, he later explained, when his pregnant model could no longer sit for him. The resulting statue of Eve remained unfinished, and Rodin held off exhibiting it until 1899—by then confident enough to present his sculpture even in an incomplete state.
