Rodin first modeled this figure in 1882 with the tympanum of The Gates of Hell in mind. Its limbs pull tightly inward against the body, creating a compact, unified mass—a design reflecting Rodin’s admiration for Michelangelo, who held that a well-made sculpture should be solid enough to tumble down a hill without breaking apart.
