Description

Not long after its discovery, the sculpture was initially believed to depict Psyche-the personification of the soul in ancient Greek thought. However, current interpretations suggest it more likely represents Aphrodite and draws its inspiration from the renowned Aphrodite of Knidos. Although created in the first century BC, this piece is a Roman adaptation of an earlier Hellenistic sculpture, echoing the stylistic influence of the sculptor Scopas. Unearthed in a severely damaged state at the amphitheatre in Capua, the statue’s defaced head has nonetheless continued to captivate viewers with its mysterious and haunting presence.
