Description
Rodin received a commission in 1880 to design a portal and set of monumental doors for the Musée des arts décoratifs in Paris—the work that became known as The Gates of Hell, featuring a wealth of relief figures. Several standalone pieces grew out of this project, including this caryatid, an early version of which appeared in 1886.
